THE OVERVIEW

The Rustler 4X4 Ultimate is for a recreational stadium-truck buyer who wants brushless four-wheel drive and would otherwise assemble a list of suspension, steering and radio upgrades. Model 67097-4 brings those decisions together in an RTR. I would shortlist it for someone who wants to drive an equipped truck while learning setup progressively. The reservation is value: premium installed parts are useful only if they match your priorities, and the battery-and-charger purchase still sits outside the car's price.

Factory upgrades make sense when you wanted those parts already.

This review links the blue complete 67097-4-BLUE listing verified by Amazon's Creators API. The manufacturer's base model is 67097-4; the color suffix identifies the reviewed variant. It is different from the brushed rear-drive Rustler, a BL-2s version or a collection of replacement aluminum pieces. The current official documentation identifies the Velineon 3500 brushless motor, VXL-3s controller, TQi radio and installed wireless module. Those details, rather than the word Ultimate alone, define the actual purchase.

The useful buying exercise is to list the equipment you wanted before reading the promotional upgrade total. GTR shocks, adjustable sway bars, a metal-geared servo and radio features have practical purposes. If you wanted only a straightforward first stock truck, those features may not justify the extra cost. If you were already planning them on another Rustler, comparing a factory-installed package can avoid duplicated parts and setup work. We have not measured an Ultimate advantage in speed, handling or durability.

The electronics are coordinated, but power equipment remains a separate project.

Traxxas supplies the assembled truck, finished clipless body, Velineon motor, VXL-3s controller, steering equipment, TQi radio and maintenance tools. The wireless module and factory telemetry sensors are documented features. That makes the radio side of this Ultimate more complete than a model advertised merely as app-compatible. It does not mean every optional sensor, expander or GPS accessory is installed. Read the exact contents and current manual before interpreting a connected feature as a fully equipped data-logging system.

The drive battery, charger and four AA transmitter cells are required purchases. The manufacturer's vehicle-completion guidance lists NiMH and 2S/3S LiPo options; its ESC compatibility description is broader than the simple vehicle shopping list. For a first setup, follow the vehicle manual and confirm dimensions, restraint and connector requirements rather than choosing a pack solely from a controller voltage range. The standard tray and supplied alternate strap create specific physical constraints that a capacity number cannot answer.

On arrival, inspect the installed upgrades as carefully as ordinary RTR parts. Check wheel security, body seating, lead routing, steering travel and shock condition. An Ultimate label does not make loose hardware impossible. Establish a conservative battery and control baseline before installing speed gearing or changing suspension settings. This is a finished purchase with substantial adjustment scope, but it is easiest to understand when the first session confirms normal operation rather than combining several modifications at once.

Before the first session

  • Choose a documented compatible drive battery and charger, checking chemistry, connector and dimensions.
  • Supply four AA transmitter cells.
  • Follow the exact manual for chemistry settings, startup sequence and free steering checks.
  • Begin with conservative controls and an open stopping area.

Four driven wheels and a slipper define the stock mechanical arrangement.

The sensorless 3500Kv Velineon motor feeds shaft-driven four-wheel drive through the documented single-speed layout, heavy-duty slipper and front and rear differentials. The manufacturer's current parts descriptions identify an aluminum center shaft and heavy-duty driveshafts. This is a coherent recreational powertrain, but it should not be confused with a sensored competition motor package or with an installed center differential merely because a center-differential option appears in the parts catalog.

The slipper setting and gear mesh deserve attention during maintenance. They influence how load reaches the drivetrain, particularly when tires regain grip after leaving the ground. Use the current instructions rather than a setting copied from a different Rustler's modified build. Start with stock gearing and modest runs on the intended terrain. Thick grass, larger tires and repeated high-load acceleration change the task even when the same controller is capable of accepting a higher cell count.

The 65-plus mph figure is a manufacturer speed claim tied to its specified gearing and battery conditions, not our measured result and not the pace promised by every stock session. The manual's gearing chart should guide any attempt to change configuration. A useful stadium truck does not need a speed-run pinion to justify ownership. If the plan is ordinary dirt driving and corners, match power and gearing to that work before optimizing a brief pass on smooth pavement.

TSM, Training Mode and the wireless module do different jobs.

The TQi radio has Traxxas Stability Management, while the VXL-3s provides Sport, Race and Training profiles. TSM concerns electronic steering assistance; Training reduces motor output. They are separate tools and should not be treated as different names for the same limitation. A driver can select a conservative controller profile while learning how assistance affects their preferred route. The current manual provides the setting procedures, and the radio's multifunction control deserves to be understood before changing it mid-session.

The installed wireless module connects the documented Traxxas Link features to a compatible device. That is useful when you want to explore settings and telemetry, but it should remain a deliberate setup session. Save a known baseline before changing rates or sensitivity. A higher level of available adjustment can be a benefit for an interested owner and an unwanted distraction for another. Our recommendation favors a buyer who will use the features methodically rather than repeatedly changing controls to compensate for an unidentified mechanical issue.

Make the first outing about predictable acceleration, turning and stopping. Assistance cannot create unlimited tire grip or make an unsuitable driving area larger. Check the correct low-voltage setting for the chosen battery and follow the shutdown sequence. This review rewards the coordinated control equipment and documented adjustment scope. We do not claim a measured correction benefit, radio range, throttle precision or telemetry accuracy, and the score remains separate from any manufacturer or Amazon customer rating.

The extra hardware is an invitation to tune one variable at a time.

The Ultimate's current specification includes a 2075R high-speed metal-geared servo, adjustable camber and toe links, adjustable front and rear sway bars and aluminum GTR shocks with threaded ride-height collars. Those components are the substantive reason to investigate this trim. They provide tools for setup, not a guarantee that one factory combination suits every ground surface. Begin by checking free steering movement, centered wheels and equal ride height before using the available adjustments to pursue a particular behavior.

A sway bar couples movement across an axle and changes how the suspension responds when the wheels move differently. That can help address body movement during cornering, but it can also change how tires follow uneven terrain. Do not fit the stiffest setting simply because it is available. Choose a repeated corner and a modest rough section, make one change and compare both. If one improves while the other worsens, the mechanism has revealed a tradeoff relevant to your own driving area.

Threaded collars make ride-height adjustments easier to set consistently, while camber and toe adjustments create another opportunity to lose the baseline. Keep notes and inspect tire wear rather than assuming an aggressive-looking wheel angle is faster. The buyer who enjoys these decisions may see genuine value in factory equipment. The buyer who does not may prefer a less elaborate RTR. Our rating reflects adjustment access and documented equipment, not a handling result from laps we have not driven.

Low stadium proportions belong on an appropriate route.

The official page documents a low-CG chassis, stadium body and current 2.8-inch Gravix tire package. It lists 27mm center ground clearance. These facts explain why I would first consider firm dirt, mixed recreational ground and predictable cornering space, while checking tall grass and large roots carefully. Four-wheel drive provides propulsion at both ends, but it does not increase every point of clearance or keep debris out of the steering and drivetrain.

Check the intended route for places where the chassis repeatedly drags. If those dominate the session, compare a monster truck instead of using increasingly large tires to recreate another format. Tire-size changes affect effective gearing and motor load, so they deserve a complete setup decision. For practice, keep an open stopping area and introduce jumps gradually. The upgraded hardware is a reason to appreciate the purchase specification, not evidence that hitting a curb will be harmless.

RC Driver's independent launch coverage identifies the Ultimate as an equipped Rustler trim. That is attributable product coverage, not our own driving and not a controlled head-to-head result. We use current manufacturer documentation to establish this version's parts, including the current tire description, and avoid carrying another generation's tire or speed observations across. Your regular surface remains the most important next source of evidence when deciding whether a tire, bar setting or different vehicle is needed.

A clipless shell sits above a more involved vehicle.

The finished body uses clipless retention, an inner cage and protective roof details, with a molded wing. Removing it provides convenient access for charging and inspection. Learn the latch rather than pulling against the body, and check the seating after each battery change. The body avoids a paint project, but it is not a promise of cosmetic survival. We have no collision log for this specific model, so sensible practice space and post-session inspection remain part of the recommendation.

Four-wheel drive, adjustable links and premium shocks add service points compared with a basic rear-drive truck. Inspect the center shaft, front and rear drive components, wheel nuts and tire bonding, then look for bent shock shafts or leaks. Clean the motor and controller cooling areas so debris does not undo the benefit of the installed equipment. Match replacements to the current exploded drawings. An Ultimate owner should expect ordinary maintenance, not assume paying for installed upgrades removes it.

There is a publication conflict in the official current specification table: height is printed as 329mm, the same as its width, while the pictured truck does not justify treating that duplicated value as a dependable storage dimension. We flag it rather than silently correcting it with an invented measurement. Verify actual height with the manufacturer or retailer if a carrying case depends on it. The rest of the maintenance assessment relies on documented access and parts information, with local inventory left unmeasured.

Compare the upgrade basket you actually wanted, not a promotional sum.

The dated price reference identifies the complete blue Ultimate vehicle. Battery, charger and four transmitter AA cells remain outside it. Select the exact power route before comparing total spending with another RTR. The startup table records those requirements without inventing prices for unspecified batteries and chargers. If you already own suitable equipment, verify the voltage, connection and physical fit rather than assuming a familiar brand label makes it compatible.

Traxxas promotes the value of the installed upgrades. That can be a useful prompt for comparison, but it should not replace your own list. If you would buy GTR shocks, sway bars, a metal-geared servo and the wireless module anyway, the integrated package may be attractive. If you would not, their catalog prices do not become money you saved. A buyer can value a feature less than its individual retail price without making the feature mechanically pointless.

Keep optional GPS, cosmetic parts and speed-run equipment separate from startup needs. A sensible charger, good basic drivers and a clear operating area contribute directly to ordinary sessions. More electronics may add enjoyable setup work, but they should answer a project you can describe. The Ultimate is strongest as a finished version of the truck you wanted, not as a starting point for replacing expensive installed parts with another expensive set before discovering how the factory configuration works.

Choose between equipped stadium driving and a different vehicle format.

The ARRMA Vorteks 223S 4X4 is a relevant complete brushless stadium-truck alternative. It documents a 2S/3S power system, DSC controls and a separate battery-and-charger purchase. It uses a different suspension and radio package, so compare those exact features rather than a general brand preference. We have not measured handling, crash resistance or speed between the Vorteks and Ultimate. The deciding question is which assembled equipment and service ecosystem fits the recreational buyer's plans.

The Traxxas Maxx 89086-4 changes the brief to a larger, heavier monster truck with 3S/4S LiPo support. That is worth comparing when rough-ground clearance and monster proportions matter more than a low stadium layout. It also changes the power basket, storage space and service scale. A Maxx recommendation should not be derived from the Ultimate's speed headline or assumed to fit every buyer who wants more tire diameter.

The Rustler XL-5 37254-8 is the simpler in-family route if your priority is a first rear-drive truck with supplied charging equipment. It omits much of the Ultimate's power and adjustment package, but asks for fewer initial battery decisions. Choose it when those omissions match your desired learning project. Choosing the Ultimate is sensible when its factory equipment is the destination; choosing a cheaper stock truck is sensible when that is the equipment you will actually use.

The Ultimate label earns value only through your intended equipment list.

I would shortlist the blue Rustler 4X4 Ultimate for a recreational owner who wants factory brushless 4WD, enjoys understanding suspension setup and would use the installed radio features. The package coordinates several credible upgrades around an assembled stadium truck. The reservations are its separate power basket, greater service complexity and the possibility that a buyer will pay for features they never wanted. The documented height conflict also needs resolving before buying a tightly sized storage case.

Our five equally weighted category scores evaluate package preparation, installed stadium equipment, control-and-adjustment access, service documentation and value against the buyer's actual upgrade plan. They are not measured speed, handling, crash or long-term reliability scores. Current manufacturer sources define the vehicle; Amazon's API identifies the exact blue listing and dated offer; RC Driver provides attributable product coverage. We have neither personally driven it nor turned another publication's promotional or driving claims into our own test results.

Buy it if you can name the installed equipment that matters to you and have budgeted compatible power. Begin with a modest battery configuration, factory settings and a repeatable route, then explore one adjustment at a time. Skip it if you want a simple supplied-battery first truck or a monster format for an awkward yard. This is a persuasive complete stadium-truck purchase when it removes a real upgrade project, and a less persuasive one when Ultimate simply sounds like the safest trim name.

BEFORE YOU ORDER /

The questions worth asking.

Which blue listing is reviewed?

The complete 67097-4-BLUE listing, manufacturer's base model 67097-4. It is different from brushed 2WD, BL-2s and ordinary VXL packages.

Is the wireless module included?

The current Ultimate page documents an installed wireless module and telemetry sensors. Optional GPS and expander accessories are separate.

Is TSM the same as Training Mode?

No. TSM concerns steering assistance; the controller's Training profile reduces motor output. Use their own documented setup procedures.

What are the main suspension upgrades?

Current documentation identifies aluminum GTR shocks, adjustable sway bars, adjustable links and a 2075R metal-geared servo. These are adjustment tools, not measured handling results.

Can I rely on the listed 329mm height?

The current specification repeats the width as height. We flag the conflict and recommend manufacturer or retailer clarification if a fitted storage case depends on height.

Does Ultimate automatically save the cost of every upgrade?

Only equipment you would actually choose contributes useful value to your own plan. Compare the finished vehicle and complete battery basket, rather than treating a promotional catalog total as universal savings.

How this review was researched.

Current manufacturer documentation establishes hardware and startup requirements. Amazon Creators API verifies B0CNG2PCWR, 67097-4-BLUE and Traxxas for the exact complete-car listing. Independent source is launch coverage rather than a controlled current-generation test. The current official height duplicates width at 329mm; verify it for fitted storage instead of relying on a silent correction. The blue API suffix is linked to the official current blue 67097-4 variant. Current Gravix tire specification is not replaced with older-generation tire descriptions. The buying conclusions and scores are our editorial judgments; we claim no personal drive test.
