THE OVERVIEW

The Big Rock 223S is for a first or returning brushless truck buyer who wants four-wheel drive, crew-cab appearance and a longer footprint than the compact Granite. I would consider it for sweeping outdoor routes, mixed recreational ground and a driver who will learn the lower-power configuration before selecting more. The qualification is the whole purchase: battery and charger remain separate, and a longer vehicle needs useful driving and storage space. Buy the shape because it fits your sessions, not because another 223S name appeared in a recommendation list.

A longer crew-cab truck when compact monster proportions are not your preference.

This review identifies the black complete ARA4312V4T1 verified through Amazon's Creators API. The current manufacturer package includes a 3100Kv brushless motor, 80A two-in-one ESC/receiver, DSC assistance and center differential. It is distinct from an older Big Rock 3S or the much larger 6S family. Its documented 327mm wheelbase and 356mm width are part of the current vehicle's identity. A crew-cab replacement body does not supply the radio, driveline and complete chassis described here.

The attraction is an assembled outdoor truck whose equipment can support a deliberate 2S-to-3S progression. There is no initial motor-installation or body-painting project. That matters to an owner who wants to begin with a finished vehicle and spend time choosing lines. If your space is compact or your enjoyment centers on a tall short-wheelbase monster, compare the Granite. If your requirement is crawling slowly over rocks, move to a crawler shortlist rather than assuming this pickup body implies the same operating brief.

Crew-cab realism sits above a coordinated RTR electronics system.

The manufacturer supplies the complete truck with finished clipless body, fitted motor, combined controller/receiver, S662 metal-geared servo, SLT3 transmitter, AA cells and basic tools. The body includes grille details and folding mirrors. These are specific reasons to consider this presentation, while assembly and painting are already done. The package is not a kit, a roller or a body-inclusive chassis awaiting every electronic choice. You receive a vehicle that can be inspected and configured directly.

A suitable 2S or 3S hardcase LiPo and charger are still required. IC5 is documented as the connection, and the current maximum battery dimensions are 165 × 51 × 48mm. Check the restraint and cable path in addition to those measurements. If a selected charger needs a separate input supply, include it before treating the basket as ready. The official transmitter AAs are supplied in this version, a useful small difference from several other RTR completion lists.

Begin with a bench inspection of wheels, body retention, mirrors, steering travel and battery mounting. Set the controls conservatively using the current manual, then establish the first route on predictable ground. A longer truck should have room to turn and stop; do not put all available space into a straight aimed at a wall. Keep the factory tires and gearing for the reference session. The point is to understand a correctly assembled stock vehicle before adding another variable.

Before the first session

  • Choose a documented compatible drive battery and charger, checking chemistry, connector and dimensions.
  • Install the four supplied AA transmitter cells.
  • Follow the exact manual for chemistry settings, startup sequence and free steering checks.
  • Begin with conservative controls and an open stopping area.

The current 223S center module belongs in the service reference.

The 3100Kv motor feeds shaft-driven four-wheel drive through the documented current center-differential module. Its center gearing is metal, and the manufacturer describes the updated layout as part of this generation. A differential permits the connected drive paths to accommodate different speeds; it should not be casually substituted in prose for a familiar older slipper arrangement. When buying a service part or following a tuning guide, verify the actual ARA4312V4 assembly rather than treating every Big Rock as mechanically identical.

The installed electronics accept both 2S and 3S. That makes a lower-cell first route available without purchasing a different motor or ESC later. Manufacturer 35-plus and 50-plus mph claims remain attached to their stated configurations and conditions. We have not measured speed, and those numbers do not determine whether your usual route is suitable. A longer outdoor truck can offer a worthwhile session of corners and modest rough sections without operating at the largest supported cell count.

Maintain a stock-gearing baseline and inspect cooling after short initial runs. The motor fan needs airflow, while vegetation, stones and binding wheels can load the powertrain. More voltage is not a repair for debris or mechanical contact. A larger tire can also change effective gearing even when the pinion stays fixed. The power scope is a useful ownership option; the first task remains a correctly restrained pack, free-running mechanism and a surface proportionate to the truck.

The growth route works best when each control setting has a purpose.

The SLT3 transmitter provides throttle limiting, and DSC offers documented assistance modes in the installed system. These functions address different questions. Output limiting concerns available power, while assistance concerns the system's corrections. Read the exact mode descriptions in the current manual. Do not assume that DSC and an AVC-equipped ARRMA vehicle use the same hardware, settings or procedures just because both discuss stability. The exact installed unit determines the operating choices you have.

Start with a conservative configuration and a battery you will repeat through several sessions. Practice smooth launches, braking and broad turns, then examine one control change on the same route. The crew-cab body can make the wheels less obvious from some angles, so position yourself where the direction of travel is clear. An assistance feature is useful only when the owner understands it; it cannot make a blind corner or insufficient braking space an appropriate place to learn.

Greg Vogel's RC Driver coverage identifies the matching black ARA4312V4T1 and describes his outdoor cold-weather driving. That is attributable independent coverage of the current generation, but it is not our test and is not a guarantee that every owner's conditions produce the same outcome. We do not transfer an observed speed, damage count or runtime into our rating. The controls assessment considers the documented system for a deliberate first or returning brushless crew-cab buyer.

The longer footprint needs a repeatable route before a parts prescription.

The current S662 metal-geared steering servo and independent oil-filled suspension are documented hardware. Check centered wheels and free travel with the chassis supported. If a tire is trapped against an obstacle, avoid holding the servo against that resistance. Inspect a binding or damaged linkage before trying to hide it with trim or more assistance. The basic setup job remains mechanical as well as electronic, even though the factory package supplies a substantial power system.

The Big Rock's 327mm wheelbase is longer than the compact Granite's documented 284mm. That fact can influence the course and storage space you plan, but it is not a measured claim that one corners or lands better. Pick a repeated turn and a low uneven section for comparisons. Record the supplied ride-height and shock arrangement before making a change tied to an observed behavior. A longer wheelbase alone does not tell you which spring or oil should replace the stock setup.

Pay attention to clearance through steering and suspension movement if you later change wheels or tires. A part that appears fine at neutral can contact the body or another component when compressed or turned. Use the current drawings to identify mounting points and exact dimensions. Our equipment score rewards the documented truck layout and setup scope for its intended recreational buyer. It does not claim a measured steering force, damping result, rollover angle or jump response.

Give the wider crew-cab truck enough room to use its format.

The current dBoots Ragnarok tire package and four-wheel-drive layout fit a recreational outdoor brief. Firm dirt, moderate loose ground and short grass are sensible first places to inspect. Walk the route for wheel-catching holes, sharp stones and hard edges near turns. Leave a clear stopping area. The vehicle's long pickup shape can be appealing on a sweeping circuit, while a cramped space may only make each session a sequence of reverses and recoveries.

Grass length remains more important than the fact that the body resembles a full-size off-road truck. Dense growth can drag and collect around moving parts. Start with short checks while learning the amount of buildup at your site. If the route repeatedly loads the motor or slows the chassis, find another patch before adding gearing or a higher-cell battery. Four driven wheels address propulsion at both ends; they do not increase every point of mechanical clearance.

Independent cold-weather driving coverage can illustrate one publisher's use, but this review does not infer a temperature-wide durability guarantee from it. The manufacturer establishes the actual current hardware, and our conclusion is about choosing a suitable ordinary route. No maximum jump, traction or water-depth result is claimed. If the activity you want is slow technical axle placement, compare a crawler; if it is very high-power stunt driving, price that different vehicle and power basket explicitly.

Folding mirrors are scale details, while access supports the daily job.

The finished crew-cab body has a clipless mounting system, grille presentation and folding mirrors. Those features make the Big Rock more than a generic chassis purchase for someone who values pickup styling. They also give you details to inspect after a tumble. Learn the retention release and check seating after battery changes. The body's appearance is a buyer-fit benefit; we do not assign a fictional realism test or promise the mirrors and shell cannot be damaged.

Remove the body to inspect the motor fan, steering, center module, shafts and shocks after a run. Raised side guards and dirt-management features do not eliminate debris. Clear the chassis before the next pack and check wheel nuts and tire bonding. Use exact current exploded views when ordering a replacement. An old Big Rock service list can refer to another central drive arrangement, so broad family compatibility should not be accepted solely because a part has the same name.

Follow the current manual for wet operation, cleaning and drying. Water-resistant electronics and bearings still belong to a mechanism that benefits from normal upkeep. We have no extended ownership record or current survey of local stock. Check the relevant shop's support for this exact generation if it is important to your buying plan. Documentation and access improve the clarity of the service job without establishing that every needed item can be bought immediately in your area.

The complete basket starts with the battery you will actually run.

The static dated reference is the manufacturer US price for the complete black vehicle. Amazon's live offer is a separate refreshed display. Add a compatible hardcase LiPo, suitable charger and any separate charging input equipment. The package already lists transmitter AAs. We avoid a universal startup subtotal because existing equipment and chosen battery route differ between owners; the table instead records the exact completion decisions that should be priced before purchase.

A first 2S pack can be a sensible baseline, with 3S left as a later choice. Owning both immediately is optional, not part of making the truck complete. Likewise, a second pack is useful when charging turnaround limits sessions, but need should follow actual use. Better drivers and cleaning supplies can support regular ownership. Another body color, cosmetic components and large electronics changes are separate projects that should not disappear inside the phrase ready-to-run accessories.

If you want a different radio or motor system immediately, count the whole replacement project before evaluating value. Coordinated factory electronics contribute most when you use them. The longer truck's storage and carrying needs also deserve attention even without a cash figure attached. A lower car-price alternative that fits your space better may receive more use. The Big Rock earns its purchase when this crew-cab format and its installed control route are the activity you planned.

Change the footprint before changing every installed component.

The Granite 223S is the compact monster comparison within the same broad power concept. Its shorter wheelbase and narrower documented footprint make it a different shape for the route, while its battery and charger are extra too. We have not measured their handling or jump response together. I would compare both physically if shelf space, transport or a small circuit matters. Choose the Big Rock for the crew-cab proportions you prefer, rather than assuming larger dimensions necessarily win.

The Vorteks 223S 4X4 takes a lower stadium-truck route. It is worth considering when exposed wheels and firmer-ground corner practice are the primary interest. Its separate two-wheel-drive family needs distinguishing during the comparison. A different body format can change access, steering visibility and tire-clearance decisions without requiring either vehicle to be faulty. Look at the actual sessions you want to repeat, then price a compatible battery basket for the exact shortlisted models.

The Traxxas Maxx 89086-4 is a substantially different monster project with 3S/4S LiPo support, greater documented mass and a broader physical footprint. Consider it when that scale and ownership budget are already desired. It is not simply a Big Rock with a larger speed number. Charging, carrying and service all change. The more useful comparison is which complete truck you can equip and use regularly in your available ground, rather than how each looks in a promotional action photograph.

A convincing longer 223S truck for the buyer who wants this footprint.

I would shortlist the black Big Rock ARA4312V4T1 for a new or returning brushless owner who prefers crew-cab presentation, has open outdoor room and wants a deliberate 2S-to-3S route. The current center differential, installed DSC equipment, finished body and documented service references make a coherent package. The reservations are the separate rechargeable basket, the physical size and the temptation to buy more power before the ordinary route is understood. Resolve those first, and the truck's purpose becomes clear.

Five equally weighted editorial categories assess starting preparation, crew-cab recreational equipment, control options, service information and complete-purchase value. They do not measure speed, cornering, landing control, crash resistance or reliability. Current manufacturer documentation establishes this generation; Amazon's API identifies the exact commercial vehicle; RC Driver provides attributable matching-variant coverage. The publisher's cold-weather driving remains its own evidence rather than a test we claim to have performed.

Buy it if the stock longer truck and its control system suit your usual sessions. Establish modest settings, keep inspection routine and price changes only when repeated use identifies their purpose. Skip it for a tiny route, a known preference for low stadium proportions or a technical crawler activity. The Big Rock's best argument is a finished crew-cab brushless project you can use often, with future power available when you decide it adds something worthwhile.

BEFORE YOU ORDER /

The questions worth asking.

Which Big Rock is reviewed?

The black complete ARA4312V4T1 current 223S. Older 3S and larger 6S Big Rock vehicles have different exact specifications.

How does its footprint differ from Granite?

The current Big Rock lists a 327mm wheelbase and 356mm width, compared with the current compact Granite’s 284mm wheelbase. That is a size comparison, not a measured handling ranking.

Are battery and charger included?

Drive LiPo and charger are extra. The official contents do list four AA transmitter cells. Select a documented 2S or 3S hardcase pack and proper charging route.

What is the documented tray limit?

Current specifications state 165 × 51 × 48mm maximum. Confirm restraint and wire clearance as well as those dimensions.

Does the current center drive match an old Big Rock guide?

Verify the exact assembly. This generation documents its center differential and module; an older slipper-oriented recipe may not describe it.

Is cold-weather toughness our measured conclusion?

No. RC Driver’s matching-variant driving is independently attributed. We score the documented purchase without measured durability, runtime or speed claims.
